Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on the physical and mental health concerns specific to women, including reproductive health and diseases that affect female reproductive organs. Broader health issues that may impact women differently than men, such as heart disease, alcohol use disorder, hormonal and sexual concerns, and chronic health issues, will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Provide an overview of common health issues women face;
- Discuss cardiometabolic health conditions in women;
- Explain alcohol use disorder in women; and
- Describe chronic health, sexual and hormonal issues among women.
10:30 am — Understanding the Intersection of Environment, Reproduction and Breast Cancer
Presenter:
Nagaraj Gabbur, MD
Descriptive Summary:
Breast cancer risk in women is influenced by reproductive life events, including the timing of menarche and menopause, the number and timing of pregnancies, and hormonal shifts over a woman’s life span. Simultaneously, exposure to environmental chemicals that affect hormonal balance may impact reproductive health and long-term cancer risk. This presentation explores how these overlapping factors contribute to women’s health, particularly in understanding and preventing breast cancer.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Recognize common signs and risk indicators associated with breast cancer;
- Discuss the relationship between reproductive history and breast cancer risk;
- Explain how environmental exposures can affect female reproductive health; and
- Discuss strategies for prevention that integrate reproductive and environmental health insights.
11:30 am — Hormone Therapy after Natural Menopause and Management of Premature Menopause

Ekta Kapoor, MD
Descriptive Summary:
Menopause symptoms, which affect up to 80 percent of women, can negatively impact their quality of life. Despite the availability of safe and effective treatment options, many women do not receive them for reasons including fear based on studies using old data. This presentation will focus on the different types of treatment for women undergoing premature menopause and menopause, including hormone therapy and nonhormone treatment options, and their risks and benefits.

- Discuss the risks and benefits of menopausal hormone therapy use;
- Explain the current recommendations for menopausal hormone therapy use;
- Review hormone therapy use in women with premature menopause; and
- Review nonhormone treatment options for menopause symptoms.

1:30 pm — Insights in Women’s Health: Pharmacological Treatments and Innovations

Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will provide an overview of traditional and new pharmacological treatments for women’s health. Technological innovations for enhancing the management of women’s health, with a focus on contraception and the management of menopause symptoms, will be discussed.

- Discuss pharmacological treatments, including new treatments, for women’s health;
- Describe pharmacist-prescribed contraception; and
- Identify technological innovations in the management of women’s health.
2:30 pm — Women’s Health: Nutrition and Lifestyle Considerations

Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on how nutrition, physical activity and stress management needs for women’s health change throughout different stages of the aging process, from the reproductive years to menopause.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Describe how women’s health considerations change during the aging process;
- Understand the impact of nutrition and physical activity on women’s health; and
- Develop strategies for stress management that impact women’s health.
3:30 pm — Not Just a Hot Flash: Menopause and Mental Health
Presenter:
Erica Sandoval, LMSW, MSW
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on the often unspoken symptoms of menopause, helping to dismantle myths, stigmas and taboos about this stage of life. Ways that menopause can impact women’s mental health; strategies for self-care and mental wellness, especially in the community, for women to discuss and navigate symptoms of menopause; and tools for supporting clients with menopause will be addressed.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify “invisible” symptoms related to menopause and mental health;
- Understand the stigmas and myths related to mental health and menopause, fostering open dialogue and taboo-free treatment; and
- Incorporate radical self-care, holistic practices and community healing for clients navigating menopause-related mental health challenges.

Members must have been a part-time or full-time employee for at least one year, work at least three-fifths of a regular workweek, and work for an employer who contributes to the 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund or the 1199SEIU Greater New York Education Fund.
City of New York Education, Child and Eldercare Fund Members
Pharmacists, Dietitians, Clinical Laboratory Practitioners and LPNs must have worked with NYC Health + Hospitals or a mayoral agency for at least one year.
Registered Nurse Training and Job Security Fund members
